Emigrating? What not to forget before your departure

The Dutch emigrate a lot. Every year, more than 100,000 Dutch citizens move abroad. Are you among those who are about to embark on this adventure? If so, it’s important to know what’s involved in an international move.

Check here to ensure you have everything you need for a smooth, worry-free departure.

Emigration by plane

No country is the same

Exactly what you need to arrange for your emigration depends largely on the country you are moving to. Each country has its own requirements and regulations regarding the transport of your belongings, as well as the administrative processes involved.

Therefore, it’s important to research the procedures for your destination country. You can find more information from the embassy of the country you are moving to. While much of this information is available online, you can also schedule an appointment at the embassy for further guidance.

Work permit

As an immigrant, you often cannot simply settle in another country without the necessary work or residency permits. The standard visas you receive are typically valid for only a limited period of time. If you are emigrating for business reasons, there’s a good chance that your employer can arrange a residence permit for you.

However, it’s advisable to check this carefully in advance. For instance, some countries require a health certificate, and in certain cases, you may need a certificate of good conduct. For countries like New Zealand, the application process can sometimes take up to a year, so make sure you start early.

Practicalities

Your emigration will have consequences for matters such as your pension, health insurance, taxes and more. It is important to contact the relevant agencies listed below, report your emigration, and inquire about the necessary steps to take or things to check before your departure:

  • Embassy/Consulate
  • Municipality (for registration and deregistration)
  • Tax authority
  • Health insurance provider
  • Pension fund
  • DigID

Ensuring that you’ve addressed these areas in advance will help make your transition abroad smoother and avoid potential complications later. Also, consider the following administrative arrangements before your departure:

  • Legalisation of documents
  • Submitting address changes to relevant agencies
  • Cancelling current subscriptions
  • Making certified copies of important documents

Provide a backstop

Who will be your point of contact for administrative and financial matters in the Netherlands?
What postal address will you use in the Netherlands for important correspondence from agencies?
Consider having your financial affairs in the Netherlands handled by family or trusted friends.
Be sure to make clear and reliable arrangements for this.

Language and culture

Getting to know your new environment is often an under-explored aspect of international relocation.
Take some time to research your new hometown. What can you discover and learn about it in advance? Doing so will make it easier – and more enjoyable – for you and your family to integrate into your new community, helping you feel truly at home.

This preparation also reduces the chances of unexpected surprises. For instance, learning the local language is a crucial step, not only for communicating with those around you but also for handling various practical matters more smoothly.

Make a moving plan

Moving your entire household to another continent is no small task. That’s why it’s important to be selective about what you do and don’t want to take with you. Additionally, consider how you want to transport your belongings.

How will you go about this?
Will you ship your items by sea or by air?
How will you pack everything to ensure it arrives safely and in one piece?
